Biography

In 1989 Silvana was born in Cologne, Germany. She is the daughter of a German mother and an Indonesian father and the second of five children. Her passion for music developed at the early age of six, when she had her first piano lessons and grew when she started to sing and to write her own songs, in English and in German, when she was eleven years old.

Silvana was inspired by artists from different genres, reaching from underground hip-hop over acoustic soul to jazz. At the age of 13, Silvana began to take singing lessons for about five years and taught herself how to play the guitar when she was 18.

After studying law in the German city Münster, Silvana moved back to her hometown Cologne to start her studies of German Language and Literature and Islamic Languages and Cultures. The more time Silvana spent practicing and thinking about her Islamic religion, the more her thoughts were displayed in her lyrics.

Silvana’s songs focus on religious, social, political topics and talk about her experiences as a muslima living in a Western society. Her goal is to make people think, acknowledge problems and change.

Silvana’s music is not meant to simply entertain or even distract people from the essential things in life. But it is actually supposed to strengthen the listener’s awareness of one’s duties and responsibilities, not only as muslims but also as human beings as a whole.

“I have a million things to say that I think could change our situation. Music is my way to get people to listen to these things, inshaAllah.” - Silvana
